This is a charming small late Victorian Sterling Silver Photo Frame. The frame is circular with a beaded inner rim. The visible image is 4.4cm in diameter. The back of the frame is covered with thin dark red leather. The glass is a convex piece of perspex which can't be the original but works well within the frame. It currently has a pretty piece of embroidery on display but obviously this can be replaced by your own picture.

The photo fram was made in Birmingham by Smith Brothers and dates to 1900. Founded in the early 1880s, Smith Brothers operated from premises in Icknield Street in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter, although their pieces were much more commonly assayed in Chester than in Birmingham. They were jewellers and silversmiths producing small pieces such as brooches, specimen vases, napkin rings, photo frames and trinket dishes. They remained in business up until around 1910.

Condition is good, with just a couple of tiny dings around the outside and some wear to the red leather on the back. The hinges on the back of the frame and the strut are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The photo frame is 6cm / 2.36ins in diameter and weighs 24.5g / 0.86oz.

The hallmarks, on the side of the frame, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter a for 1900 and the S.B makers' mark for Smith Brothers.
