Edwardian Silver Matchbox Holder, Birmingham, 1903

This is a charming small Edwardian Sterling Silver Matchbox Holder. The holder is of a simple wrap around form, open on one long side to expose the strike and at either end to allow the drawer of the matchbox to open. Both front and back are embossed with the Reynolds' Angels design, based on a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, which was a hugely popular subject in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
The matchbox holder was made in Birmingham by celebrated silversmith Henry Matthews and dates to 1903. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware, particularly small personal items, and remained in business up until around 1930.
The matchbox holder has definitely seen some use but overall condition is good with just a few truly tiny dings down the spine and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of use, much of it spent in a pocket or handbag. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The matchbox holder is for small boxes with short matches. It is 4.2cm / 1.6ins long, 2.7cm / 1.1ins wide and 1.3cm / 0.51ins deep. It weighs in at 7.8g / 0.27oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the bottom of the holder at the front, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter d for 1903 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
