George IV Silver Jewellery Stand, S. Mordan, 1828

Here we have a stunning George IV Sterling Silver Jewellery Stand. The circular stand has a partitioned circular base with an outer rim of roses. The centrepiece is a fully realised rose, stem, bud and leaves at varying angles to allow antique jewellery pieces to be hung from them. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The jewellery stand was made in London by renowned silversmiths Sampson Mordan and Gabriel Riddle and dates to 1828. Sampson Mordan established his company in London in 1815 and in 1822 he was granted the world’s first patent for a mechanical pencil. After a partnership with Gabriel Riddle from 1823 to 1836 was dissolved, the firm was renamed S. Mordan & Co, with Sampson’s sons, Sampson Jr and Augustus, taking over in 1843. Alongside their pencils business, the firm specialised in small silver novelties such as letter openers, bookmarks, decanter labels, pin cushions, inkwells and cigar cutters. In 1941 the factory was destroyed by enemy bombing and the firm ceased trading. They are one of the most widely collected of all silversmiths.
Condition is good with just one rosebud missing from the border. The bottom leaf only has the part closest to the stem but it is not clear if this is damage or design. Overall it has survived very well through over 195 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jewellery stand is 11cm / 4.3ins in diameter and stands 7cm / 2.7ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 157.5g / 5.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, in the base of the stand, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter n for 1828, the George IV duty mark and the S M.G R makers' mark for Sampson Mordan and Gabriel Riddle. There is a secondary partial set on one leaf and a lion passant stamp on the back of the main rose.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the stand.
