Victorian Scent Bottle with Silver Collar, 1893
This is an elegant late Victorian Cut Glass Perfume Bottle with a long Sterling Silver collar. The scent bottle is of conical form with deep cut roundels and diagonal lines and it has a multi faceted stopper.
The scent bottle was made in London by Middleton Chapman, Son & Co and dates to 1893. The firm traced its origins back to 1798 and were originally cabinet makers. During the 19th century they became renowned for their high quality dressing cases for both men and women that drew on their cabinet making skills and were filled with silver mounted glass items. The firm was based in Clerkenwell, the heart of London’s silver industry and employed many Chapman family members over the years. They remained in business into the 1930s.
Overall condition is good, with no chips or cracks in the glass. The silver collar does show signs of use with multiple small dings. The stopper fits securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The perfume bottle stands 18.2cm / 7.16ins high and is 6.7cm / 2.64ins in diameter across the base. It weighs 237.7g / 8.4oz.
The hallmarks on the silver collar are somewhat rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter S for 1893 and the M.C makers' mark for Middleton Chapman, Son & Co.
