William IV Silver Dessert Spoon, London, 1837
This is a good quality William IV Sterling Silver Dessert Spoon in the classic Fiddle pattern. The spoon has been later engraved with the letters RPM and the date 1883. It could be perfect for someone who likes listening to their music on vinyl!
The spoon is made in London by renowned silversmiths Hayne & Cater and dates to 1837, the last year of William IV's reign. The firm traced its origin back to a business started by Thomas Wallis in around 1758. His son formed a partnership with Jonathan Hayne who eventually took sole control of the firm and was succeeded by his son Samuel Hayne who took Dudley Cater as his partner in 1836. They finally ceased trading in 1865.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after 185 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dessert spoon is 17.6cm / 6.9ins long and weighs a very respectable 51.0g / 1.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter B for 1837, the William IV duty mark and the SH over DC makers' mark for Samuel Hayne & Dudley Cater.
Shipping in the UK is £5 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
