Victorian Silver Communion Set, George Unite, 1879

Here we have a superb quality Cased Victorian Sterling Silver Travelling Communion Set. The set comprises a paten for the host, a small chalice and a silver topped glass bottle for the wine. The paten and chalice have geometric engraving and the IHS symbol and the interior of the chalice is gilded. The glass bottle is slice cut with a plain silver screw top lid with a cork inset to form a seal. The box is lined with blue satin in the lid and purple velvet in the base.
The communion set was made in Birmingham with the chalice and paten being made by acclaimed silversmiths George Unite & Sons in 1879 and the bottle by Henry Manton, a specialist in silver mounted glass, in 1878. Everything fits perfectly into the fitted case.
Condition is very good, with just a few tiny dings in the internal silver rim of the glass bottle, no chips or cracks in the glass, no loss to the gilding and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 145 years of good service. The box is a little scuffed on the outside but the hinges and clasp are in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The paten is 6.5cm / 2.5ins in diameter, the chalice is 8.4cm / 3.3ins high and 4.2cm / 1.6ins in diameter and the bottle is 8.2cm / 3.2ins high and 3.6cm / 1.4ins wide. The two silver items weigh in at 68.9g / 2.4oz of solid Sterling Silver, the three items together weigh 138.9g / 4.9oz and the cased set comes in at 249.2g / 8.8oz.
The hallmarks are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the anchor assay mark for Birmingham. The paten and chalice have the date letter e for 1879 and the G U makers' mark for George Unite and Sons. The lid of the bottle has the date letter d for 1878 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Manton.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by RoyalMail Special Delivey, which includes cover for the set.
