George V Silver Mug, William Suckling, B'ham, 1929

Here we have a delightful George V Sterling Silver Mug from the 1920s. The mug is of traditional tankard design with engine turned lines around the body and a blank circular cartouche at the front. It has a scroll handle with a flat top. This was almost certainly intended as a Christening Gift but would be ideal for any sort of special occasion today.
The mug was made in Birmingham by William Suckling Ltd and dates to 1929. William Suckling founded his company in Birmingham in around 1895. They initially produced electroplated wares but in 1922 the firm registered their first mark at the Birmingham assay office to produce Sterling Silver items alongside their electroplate manufacturing. They produced a wide range of silverware for the table and general domestic use before they finally ceased trading in 1965.
Condition is very good, with just one truly tiny ding in the base plus the most minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect with the passage of time. It seems likely that this has seen little or no use and been kept as a treasured gift and heirloom. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mug is 8.5cm / 3.3ins from rim to handle, 6.5cm / 2.5ins in diameter and stands 6.5cm / 2.5ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 100g / 3.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the outside of the body near the handle, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter E for 1929 and the S Ld makers' mark for William Suckling Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mug.
