George V Silver Cigarette Case, W.H. Sparrow, 1913
This is a stylish George V Sterling Silver Cigarette Case. The case is oblong with rounded corners and the back is curved to fit comfortably into a pocket. The front and back are engraved with an elaborate acanthus leaf design with a blank cartouche on the front. The interior is gilded.
The cigarette case was made in Birmingham by William Henry Sparrow and dates to 1913. William Sparrow established his business in Birmingham in 1903. He made a broad range of primarily small silverware for personal use, much of it aimed at female customers such as compacts, perfume bottles and thimbles as well as photo frames, cigarette cases, vestas and napkin rings. His mark was registered in Birmingham, London and Chester and the firm remained in business into the mid 1920s.
Condition is very good, with just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 110 years of good service. The hinge and clasp are in full working order and the case snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case is 8.2cm / 3.2ins by 6cm / 2.3ins and 1.5cm / 0.59ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 54.0g / 1.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter o for 1913 and the W.H.S makers' mark for William Henry Sparrow.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette case.
