George V Silver Celtic Tazza, Henry Matthews, 1913
Here we have an attractive George V Sterling Silver Tazza with twin handles. The tazza has a fluted pedestal stand and a shallow saucer style bowl with a wavy rim. The sides of the bowl are decorated with Celtic banding and roundels whilst the handles hang from a lug on each side and have graduated rings on their lower bar.
The tazza is made in Birmingham by noted silversmith Henry Matthews and dates to 1913. The Arts & Crafts movement of the late 19th and early 20th century reawakened an interest in all things Celtic and this dish is definitely shows that influence.
Condition is very good. The only small issue is that the rings of the handles have made a little ding on either side of the bowl over the course of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tazza stands 8.8cm / 3.5ins high and the top rim of the bowl is 10.3cm / 4ins in diameter. It weighs in at a very respectable 88g / 3.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the side of the bowl are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter o for 1913 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the tazza.
