George V Silver Belt Buckle, James Fenton, 1911

Here we have a top quality George V Sterling Silver Belt Buckle. The buckle is a scalloped oblong shape with the front having chased floral decoration. There is a single prong fastening. The rear of the buckle is engraved with the initials L C and the date 1911, not visible when the buckle is being worn, suggesting this was originally given as a gift.
The buckle was made in Birmingham by James Fenton & Co and dates to 1911. James Fenton registered his mark at Birmingham’s assay office in 1852, later becoming James Fenton & Co. His firm produced jewellery, accesories and small silver items for personal use and they are well known for their range of thimbles. They remained in business for around a hundred years, finally closing in the mid 1950s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The buckle is 5cm / 1.9ins wide and 8cm / 3.1ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 42.2g / 1.49oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the front of the buckle, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter m for 1911 and the J.F. makers' mark for James Fenton & Co.
