Art Deco Silver Tea Strainer, Mappin & Webb, 1926 Art Deco George V 1920s %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a very stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Tea Strainer from the 1920s. The round bowl is pierced in a star pattern and the two flat handles are leaf shaped with engine turned decoration.

The tea strainer was made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1926. One of the best known names in English silverware, the firm was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr. In 1859 the company split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The Mappin & Webb brand name remains a byword for quality and style to this day.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after nigh on 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The tea strainer is 11.1cm / 4.4ins from handle to handle, 5.6cm / 2.2ins across the bowl and 1.7cm / 0.67ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 27.3g / 0.96oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the outside of the bowl below the rim, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter B for 1926 and the Mn & Wb makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. The underside of one handle also bears the retail stamp MAPPIN & WEBB LTD.
