Victorian Silver Sauce Ladle, George Unite, 1888
This is an attractive Victorian Sterling Silver Sauce Ladle. The ladle has a geometric pattern up the front of the stem and a framed blank oval cartouche at the top.
The ladle was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths George Unite & Sons and dates to 1888. George Unite & James Hilliard founded the firm in 1825 as Unite & Hilliard. After Hilliard withdrew in the 1830s, George continued by himself before the firm became George Unite & Sons in 1865. The business remained under the management of the Unite family until 1897 when it was taken over by William Lyde who retained the name up until the late 1920s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 135 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The ladle is 13.5cm / 5.3ins long and 4.3cm / 1.7ins wide across the bowl. It weighs in at 19.3g / 0.68oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter o for 1888, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the G U makers' mark for George Unite & Sons.
