George V Silver Tea Strainer, Atkin Bros, 1914

This is a good quality, heavy George V Sterling Silver Tea Strainer. The strainer has a circular bowl with a pie crust rim and a long tab extending from the front. The handle is in the dog nose pattern, an early 18th century pattern which was revived in the early 20th century. The bowl is pierced in a star pattern.
The tea strainer was made in Sheffield by Atkin Brothers and dates to 1914, right at the start of the First World War. Tracing its roots back to Thomas Law in the mid-18th century, the Atkin family took sole control of the business in 1840, first as Henry Atkin & Co and then from 1853 as Atkin Brothers. The firm manufactured both silverware and electroplate in Sheffield and also had a London showroom. They ceased trading in 1958.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 110 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tea strainer is 17.5cm / 6.9ins long, 8cm / 3.1ins across the top rim and the bowl is 1.7cm / 0.67ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 62.6g / 2.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the top rim of the strainer, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter w for 1914 and the H A makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers. On the underside of the stem is a registered design number of 372053, which dates the original design to 1901.
