Victorian Silver Bachelor Teapot, A.B. Savory 1838 Victorian Silver Teapot %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Here we have a superb quality early Victorian Sterling Silver Bachelor Teapot. The teapot is of compressed spherical form on a pedestal base. The base, body and lid are all extravagantly decorated with an embossed and chased acanthus leaf pattern. There is a small crest on one side of the teapot of a lion passant gardant holding a star, which we have so far been unable to attribute to a particular name.

The teapot was made in London by the renowned silversmiths A.B. Savory & Sons and dates to 1838. The firm was founded in the City of London by Adey Bellamy Savory in 1812. Savory was of Huguenot descent and was both a silversmith and a dealer in foreign coins. His sons Joseph and Albert Savory became partners in 1833 and the firm became A.B. Savory & Sons. They had both manufacturing and retail premises in the City. The company was manged by first William Smily and then Samuel Smily between 1855 and 1879 the latter overseeing the change of name to The Goldsmiths Alliance Ltd in 1866. In 1893 they were absorbed by The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company.

Condition is exceptionally good with no dings or dents and a pristine interior. It seems as though this teapot has been kept more as a decorative piece and has seen little or no use, although it is perfectly usable. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The teapot is a small bachelor size, very much a teapot for one. It measures 17.5cm / 6.9ins from spout to handle, 10cm / 3.9ins across and stands 11.2cm / 4.4ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 274.9g / 9.7oz.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter C for 1838, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J S over A S makers' mark for Joseph & Albert Savory of A.B. Savory & Sons.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the teapot.
