Royal Silver Shoe Buckles

George III was King of England between 1760 and 1820. Despite his political belligerence, his loss of the American Colonies and the state of his mental health during the last twenty years of his life, George III was a popular King. During his reign shoe buckles were the height of fashion and, from 1782, the King even had his own buckle-maker. His buckle designs became so popular that they were soon being exported to France. This pair of silver court shoe buckles has an interesting royal connection. The accompanying note, which was written during the 19th century, explains that George III gave the buckles to Dr. Layard [Charles Peter] who was the retiring Dean of Bristol, in 1803. The buckles then passed to his third son [Henry Peter John Layard] who lived in Ceylon until his death in 1834. The buckles then became the property of Henry’s second son, General Frederic Peter Layard who lived until 1891. The buckles remained in the Layard family until 2009. Most of the information in the note has been verified and the 19th century claim that they belonged to George III appears genuine. Item 0042.
