A rare and unusual German Jugendstil cheroot cutter, designed by Ignatius Taschner around 1900, modeled as a monkey seated in a rounded tray. Ingeniously designed, the monkey’s tail lifts to act as the cutting edge, with a small hole for inserting the cheroot. The brass monkey features riveted limbs and engraved detailing, sitting on a hand-hammered copper base. This whimsical design is typical of early 20th-century German novelty metalwork similar examples were also made as dogs, storks, and elephants, and are typically unsigned.
