George V Silver Teddy Bear Teether, B'ham, 1918
Here we have a charming George V Sterling Silver and Mother of Pearl Teether. The silver body of the teether is modelled as a teddy bear with the handle and the teething ring formed out of mother of pearl. This would make a perfect Christening or New Baby gift.
The teether was made in Birmingham by Crisford & Norris and dates to 1918. Harold Crisford & William Norris established their business in 1896 at premises in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They are best known for their good quality and well designed small items for personal use, novelty baby rattles, pin cushions and stylish powder compacts. They remained in business up until around 1970.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver, no chips or cracks in the mother of pearl and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 105 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teether is 14.9cm / 5.8ins long, 3.7cm / 1.4ins wide and 1.4cm / 0.55ins deep. It weighs in at 31.4g / 1.1oz.
The hallmarks, around the collar at the top of the handle, are quite rubbed after many years of cleaning but can still be deciphered. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter t for 1918 and the C & N makers' mark for Crisford & Norris.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the teether.
