George V Silver Dressing Table Set, Chester, 1924

Here we have a fine quality Cased George V Sterling Silver Six Piece Dressing Table Set. The set consists of a hand mirror, two hair brushes, a comb and two clothes brushes. The silver backs are decorated with a classic, elegant design of flowers and a ribbon garland. The leather covered case has gold velvet in the base and gold silk lining on the inside of the lid. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The set was made by silversmiths J & R Griffin and assayed in Chester in 1924. Brothers Joseph & Richard Griffin founded their firm in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter in 1895 but a large percentage of their work was assayed in Chester. They made a wide range of silverware for personal, domestic and table use before they ceased trading in 1926.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after 100 years of good service. The comb is clearly not the original (although the silver holder is) but it works perfectly well with the rest of the set. The box is a little scuffed on the outside and the two silk struts are worn through but overall condition is good and the hinges and clasps are in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The hand mirror is 25.4cm /10ins long and 15cm / 5.9ins across. The hair brushes are 25cm / 9.8ins long and 7cm / 2.7ins across. The comb holder is 19.1cm / 7.5ins long and the clothes brushes are 16.3cm / 6.4ins long by 3.7cm / 1.4ins wide. The case is 38cm / 14.9ins long, 20cm / 7.9ins deep and 8.5cm / 3.3ins high. The cased set weighs in at 2.15kg / 75.9oz.
The hallmarks across all the pieces are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter Y for 1924 and the J & R G makers' mark for J & R Griffin.
Shipping in the UK is £22 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the weight and value of the set.
