George V Shell & Silver Trinket Dish, Chester 1923
Here we have a charming George V Trinket Dish formed of a clam shell mounted onto a Sterling Silver stand. The stand is weighted for stability.
The trinket dish is made by J & R Griffin and assayed in Chester in 1923. Formed in the mid-1890s by brothers Joseph & Richard Griffin, their firm was actually based in Birmingham but had virtually all of their pieces assayed in Chester. The company ceased trading in 1926.
Condition is generally good but there is a small dent in the bottom rim of the base and a couple of little nibbles out of the rim of the shell, which is obviously quite delicate. However it remains a very attractive little dish. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The shell of the trinket dish is 8.6cm by 4.2cm and the shell plus stand is 3.5cm high. It weighs in at 55.9g.
The hallmarks on the bottom of the base are clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter X for 1923 and the J & R G makers' mark for J & R Griffin Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
