Art Deco Silver Cigarette Case, John Rose, 1937

This is a stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Slimline Cigarette Case. The case has engine turned decoration all over the outside and and a typically Deco stepped design to front and back. The interior is gilded. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cigarette case was made in Birmingham by silversmith John Rose and dates to 1937. John Rose founded his firm at Hockley Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter in 1900. They quickly became successful and produced a wide range of silverware, particularly smoking accessories and tableware. The company remained in business into the late 1970s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The hinge and clasp are both in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case measures 8.1cm / 3.2ins by 6.5cm / 2.5ins and is 0.8cm / 0.31ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 75.0g / 2.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter N for 1937 and the J R makers' mark for John Rose.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette case.
