A Seventeenth Century Carved Oak Panel
A large, richly coloured and ornamental oak panel, hand-carved in a guilloche pattern with a two continuous bands intertwining around boldly carved flower heads, with lyre shaped motifs at intervals running along the lower edge.
This panel is likely from a seventeenth century bed, or possibly a court cupboard, and the design is similar to that found around the doorway in the Church of San Salvatore in Lauro, Rome. The guilloche design is almost Celtic in inspiration, the continuous unbroken lines often found on Celtic carving representing eternity.
A charming and aged oak panel, perfect for wall display, for incorporating into a piece of antique furniture, or to add an architectural accent to a room.
