2 x Art Deco Silver Toast Racks, Mappin & Webb

Here we have a handsome Pair of Sterling Silver Toast Racks in the Art Deco style from the 1950s. Each rack holds four pieces of toast. They are rectangular and stand on four bracket feet. There are flat Odeon style handles at either end. Although primarily associated with the 1920s and 1930s, Art Deco items continued to be produced well into the 1950s.
The toast racks were made in Sheffield by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and date to 1954. One of the best known names in English silverware, the firm was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr. In 1859 the company split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The Mappin & Webb brand name remains a byword for quality and style to this day.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each toast rack is 10.2cm / 4ins from handle to handle, 4.2cm / 1.6ins wide and 4.2cm / 1.6ins high. The pair together weigh in at a very respectable 99.0g / 3.49oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the sides of the bases, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter M for 1954 and the M & W makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. They also have the retail stamp MAPPIN & WEBB LTD, LONDON & SHEFFIELD on the undersides of the bases.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the toast racks.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
