Victorian Silver Photo Frame, Birmingham, 1900
This is an elegant late Victorian Sterling Silver Photo Frame. The easel back frame is oblong with a visible picture size of 5.25ins by 3.75ins. There is an inner band of beaded decoration around the picture and then an outer wider band of pierced decoration.
The photo frame was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Deakin & Francis and dates to 1900, the last full year of Queen Victoria's long reign. Deakin & Francis have a proud history as silversmiths and jewellers dating back to 1786. The firm is still run by members of the Deakin family today. They are England's oldest manufacturing jewellers and still working from the same building that they started in back in the 18th century.
Condition is very good, with just a slight bruise to the top left hand corner of the frame and the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 125 years of use. The strut works safely and securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The frame is 16.5cm / 6.5ins high, 12.7cm / 5ins wide and stands 13.5cm / 5.3ins deep with the strut fully extended. It weighs 250.7g / 8.8oz.
The hallmarks, on the bottom left hand corner of the frame, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmigham, the date letter a for 1900 and the D & F makers' mark for Deakin & Francis.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the frame.
