Victorian Silver Mustard Spoon, Sheffield, 1874

This is a good quality Victorian Sterling Silver Mustard Spoon in the ornate Venetian pattern. The Venetian pattern, introduced in 1868, is a baroque design with a circular cartouche at the top of the stem. This spoon has a blank cartouche.
The mustard spoon was made in Sheffield by well known silversmiths Martin, Hall & Co and dates to 1874. The firm was founded by Richard Martin and brothers Ebenezer & Joshua Hall in 1854 as the successor to Roberts & Hall, in which Ebenezer had been a partner. The company manufactured in Sheffield and had showrooms in London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sydney, Australia. They participated in many international exhibitions and won a number of awards. The firm went into decline with the economic downturn of the 1930s and had ceased trading by 1936.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just a couple of tiny salt spots on the tip of the bowl plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 150 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard spoon is 8.9cm / 3.5ins long and weighs in at 7.5g / 0.26oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the bowl, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter G for 1874, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the R M over E H in a quatrefoil makers' mark for Richard Martin and Ebenezer Hall of Martin, Hall & Co. In addition, on the heel of the spoon, there is a somewhat rubbed registered design mark which shows that the design originated in 1868.
