Victorian Silver Mustard Pot, William Hutton, 1899

This is an elegant late Victorian Sterling Silver Mustard Pot with its original Blue Glass Liner. The drum shaped pot has a scroll handle and a pierced scroll work body to either side of a large shield shaped blank cartouche. The top and bottom rims are beaded and the hinged lid has a trefid thumb rest.
The mustard pot was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons Ltd and dates to 1899. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into difficulty in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced bodywork, no chips or cracks in the glass liner and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot is 7.6cm / 3ins from rim to handle, 5.4cm / 2.1ins in diameter and stands 5.7cm / 2.2ins high. Without the glass liner it weighs in at a very respectable 82.9g / 2.92oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 139.3g / 4.91oz.
The hallmarks, at the top of the cartouche, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter z for 1899 and the distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £13.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mustard pot.
