Victorian Silver Mustard Pot, London, 1862

Here we have a handsome Large Victorian Sterling Silver Mustard Pot complete with its Blue Glass Liner. The pot is of bulbous form with a flat circular rim foot, a scrolling handle and a shell thumb rest. The body is engraved with scroll and flower decoration. The cartouche on the lid was once engraved with some initials but these have been polished away by many years of cleaning and now just a trace remains. The inside of the pot is gilded.
The mustard pot was made in London by George Richards and Edward Brown and dates to 1862. George John Richards registered his mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1844 and was joined by Edward Charles Brown in 1857. The firm primarily produced good quality tableware but also created some fine ecclesiastical silver. They continued in business together into the early 1870s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no chips or cracks in the glass liner and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 160 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot is 7.1cm / 2.8ins from rim to handle, 6.2cm / 2.4ins across the body and stands 7.7cm / 3ins high. Without the glass liner it weighs in at a substantial 97.6g / 3.4oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 155.9g / 5.5oz.
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body near the handle, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter g for 1862, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the G R over E B makers' mark for George Richards and Edward Brown. There is a second partial set on the inside of the lid.
Shipping in the UK is £12.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mustard pot.
