Victorian Silver Mug, John Gallimore, 1895

Here we have a very high quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Mug or Christening Cup. The mug is beautifully decorated around the lower part of the body with flowers, foliage and reeded decoration and it has a plain c-shape handle. There are no initials or inscription of any kind making this ideal as a gift for a Christening or any other special occasion.
The mug was made in Sheffield by John Gallimore and dates to 1895. John Gallimore founded his firm in 1876, initially as electroplaters. He registered his first Sterling Silver mark at the Sheffield assay office in 1885. He principally produced tableware and most of the company’s output was high quality silver plate but they also produced some very fine silverware. The firm remained in business until the late 1890s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 130 years. This suggests the mug has been kept as a treasured gift and heirloom rather than being used on any regular basis. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mug measures 7.7cm / 3ins from rim to handle, 6.9cm / 2.7ins in diameter and stands 7.7cm / 3ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 106.3g / 3.75oz / 3.4toz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, just below the rim, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter c for 1895 and the J.G makers' mark for John Gallimore.
Shipping in the UK is £13.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mug.
