This is a lovely late Victorian Cut Glass Scent Bottle with a Sterling Silver Collar and Lid. The bottle is oval shaped with flattened ends and has a deep cut diamond pattern around the body. The hinged silver lid has a floral top and scroll decorated sides. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The perfume bottle was made in Birmingham by C.C. May & Sons and dates to 1895. Charles May founded his firm in Shoreditch in London in 1838. By 1881 they had moved to Hackney and become C.C. May & Son. The company specialised in silver mounted glass, particularly dressing table and grooming items and match strikes, and also in silver thimbles, which they produced in considerable quantity. They registered marks in both London and Birmingham. The firm ceased trading in the early 1920s.

Condition is extremely good, with no chips or cracks in the glass bottle, no dings or dents in the silver and just the overall superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 130 years of good service. The interior glass stopper is in good condition, fits snugly and is easy to remove. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The scent bottle is 8.6cm / 3.4ins high, 4cm / 1.6ins across and 2.2cm / 0.87ins deep across the top of the lid. It weighs in at 58.7g / 2.07oz.

The hallmarks, on the silver collar, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter v for 1895 and the C M makers' mark for C.C. May & Sons.
