Victorian Silver Fish Slice, Harrison Bros, 1867

This is an attractive, good quality Victorian Sterling Silver Fish Slice. The fish slice has a pierced, scimitar shaped blade with beautiful chased decoration and ribbed decoration along the length of the filled handle. A dramatic crest of a lion's paw holding an axe is engraved at the bottom of the handle.
The fish slice is made in Sheffield by silversmiths Harrison Brothers & Howson and dates to 1867. Brothers James & Henry Harrison in partnership with James Howson acquired Thomas Sansom & Sons in 1847 and renamed it Harrison Brothers & Howson. The firm was very successful and opened a London showroom in 1866. It remained in the two families until it was acquired by Viner's in 1923. The brand name was relaunched under new ownership in 1978.
Condition is very good with just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 155 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The fish slice is 30.2cm / 11.9ins long and 4.9cm / 1.9ins across the blade. It weighs in at 144g / 5oz but this does include the pitch filler in the handle.
The hallmarks on the blade are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter Z for 1867, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the H.H makers' mark for Harrison Brothers & Howson. The collar of the handle is also hallmarked and there are two largely rubbed away registered design diamond marks, one on either side of the handle.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the fish slice.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
