Victorian Silver Box, G'smiths & S'smiths, 1900

Here we have a fine quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Trinket Box with a gilt interior. The box is oblong with a hinged lid and elaborately decorated with an embossed design of cherubs, scrolls and foliage around a blank central cartouche.
The box was made in London by the famous Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company and dates to 1900, the last full year of Queen Victoria's long reign. Founded in 1880 by William Gibson and John Langman, The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company occupied a famous showroom at 112 Regent Street where they served a high end clientele with goods of the very finest quality. They manufactured at Clerkenwell in London and the Regent Works in Sheffield. In 1952 they amalgamated with Garrard & Co.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents and just two small splits at the front corners of the lid, where a previous owner has shut the lid with a little too much force, plus the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after 125 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box is 9.8cm / 3.8ins long, 4.8cm / 1.9ins wide and 3.2cm / 1.2ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 97.6g / 3.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the body, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter e for 1900 and the distinctive G & S Co Ld makers' mark for The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd. There is a second partial set on the outside rim of the lid.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the box.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
