Victorian Dressing Table Pot w/ Silver Lid, 1880
This is an elegant Victorian Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver Lid. The oval upright pot is slice cut and the silver lid is attractively engraved with flower panels around a blank diamond shaped cartouche.
The dressing table pot was made in London by Wolfsky & Co and dates to 1880. Wolfsky & Co was founded by Moritz Wolfsky in the late 1860s. They specialised in luggage and fitted travelling cases and the contents of fitted vanity cases for both men and women. The firm was based in the City of London and later also had a showroom in London's West End. They remained in business into the 1930s.
Condition is good, with just a small nibble to the underside of the base and a couple of truly tiny nibbles on one of the slice cut ribs plus the overall superficial surface wear to pot and lid that you would anticipate after 145 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The oval pot is 6.9cm / 2.7ins by 4.1cm / 1.6ins and stands 9cm / 3.5ins high. The lid by itself weighs in at a respectable 17.3g / 0.61oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 216.3g / 7.6oz.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the lid, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter E for 1880, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the M.W makers' mark for Moritz Wolfsky of Wolfsky & Co.
