Here we have a fine quality, heavyweight Pair of George III Sterling Silver Salt Spoons. The spoons are double struck in the Fiddle, Thread & Shell pattern and have gilded bowls. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The spoons were made in York by silversmiths Robert Cattle and James Barber and date to 1812. Robert Cattle & James Barber were in partnership between around 1807 and 1813. Robert Cattle had already been in partnerships dating back to the 1790s and James Barber would be involved in several partnerships afterwards through to the late 1840s. Their mark is most commonly seen on flatware but they made a variety of other tableware as well.

York has a long history of silversmithing going back to the Middle Ages but production levels were much smaller than other areas and the assay office closed in 1858. Due to its comparative rarity, York silverware is much sought after by collectors.

Condition is very good, with no dents, no significant salt corrosion and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 210 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt spoons are well made in a heavy gauge of silver. Each spoon is 10.2cm / 4ins long and the pair together weigh in at a very respectable 54.3g / 1.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are a little rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the York date letter a for 1812, the George III duty mark and the R C over J B makers' mark for Robert Cattle and James Barber.
