Lindisfarne Silver Teaspoon, Cooper Bros, 1968

Here we have a mid-century Sterling Silver Teaspoon in the Lindisfarne pattern. The spoon is made by Cooper Brothers & Sons in Sheffield and dates to 1968. Founded in 1866 as Cooper Brothers and specialising in electroplate, by the turn of the century they were Cooper Brothers & Sons and were producing very good quality Sterling Silver, particularly flatware and cutlery. The firm was finally bought out in 1983.
The Lindisfarne pattern, inspired by decoration from the Anglo-Saxon Lindisfarne Gospels, was first introduced in 1938. Production was interrupted by the outbreak of war the following year and the pattern was not reintroduced until the late 1950s. Runs of the pattern were always quite small and today it has become very collectable.
Condition of the spoon is very good with no dings or dents and only the most superficial of surface wear. It seems likely that the spoon has seen very little use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teaspoon is 11cm / 4.4" long and weighs a respectable 14.4g / 0.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter "A" for 1968 and the CB&S makers' mark for Cooper Brothers & Sons. There is also a registered design number of 829775, dating the origin of the pattern to 1938.
