George V Silver Mustard Pot, L&R, Birmingham, 1932
This is an attractive George V Sterling Silver Mustard Pot from the 1930s complete with its original Blue Glass Liner. The square pot stands on four spread feet and the top rim is gadrooned with shell motifs at the corners and midpoints. The lid has a turned finial and the handle is topped with an acanthus leaf.
The mustard pot was made in Birmingham by silversmiths L & R and dates to 1932. We've not been able to track down any real information about L & R as they only seem to have been active for a very short period in the early 1930s but they were clearly competent silversmiths.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver, no chips or cracks in the glass liner and just the overall superficial surface wear that you would anticipate with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot is 6.9cm / 2.7ins from rim to handle, 4.9cm / 1.9ins across and 4.6cm / 1.8ins high. Without the glass liner it weighs in at a very respectable 47.6g / 1.68oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 65.0g / 2.29oz.
The hallmarks, on the side of the body, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter H for 1932 and the L & R makers' mark. There is a partial set of the lion passant and the date letter H on the inside of the lid.
