George V Silver Egg Cup, Robert Pringle, 1919
This is a smart George V Sterling Silver Egg Cup. The cup is of traditional design with a circular line decorated base, a short pedestal stem and a rolled rim around the top of the cup. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The egg cup was made by Robert Pringle & Sons and assayed in Chester in 1919. Robert Pringle started his business in London's Clerkenwell Road around 1870, with his sons joining the business in the mid-1880s. The company manufactured in London, Sheffield and Birmingham with a mark also registered in Chester. They remained a family run firm making a wide range of silverware for domestic and personal use until finally closing in the late 1950s.
Condition is good, with just some truly tiny dings plus the superficial wear that you would expect after over 105 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cup stands 6.1cm / 2.4ins high and is 4.4cm / 1.7ins in diameter. It weighs in at 23.4g / 0.82oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the outside just below the rim, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the cursive date letter T for 1919 and the R.P makers' mark for Robert Pringle & Sons.
