George V Silver Egg Cup & Spoon Set, 1928
Here we have a good quality Cased George V Sterling Silver Egg Cup and Spoon Set. The egg cup has a stepped circular base and a rolled top rim and the spoon is in the classic Old English pattern. Neither egg cup nor spoon has initials or personalisation of any kind making them ideal as a Christening Gift.
The set was made in Birmingham in 1928 for retailer W.W. Kemp & Son of Bristol. The egg cup has the sponsors' mark for W.W. Kemp & Son whilst the spoon has the mark for William Neale & Son, a renowned Birmingham silversmith who almost certainly made the egg cup as well since Kemp & Son were retailers and not manufacturers. The fitted box is for W.W. Kemp & Son of High Street, Bristol.
Condition is exceptionally good, with no dings or dents and no wear and tear. It seems the set has always been kept as a treasured item rather than used. The box is in very good condition with just some very minor scuffing. The hinges and clasp are all in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The egg cup is 6.6cm / 2.6ins high and 4.7cm / 1.8ins in diameter. The spoon is 11.3cm / 4.4ins long. All together, unboxed, the set weighs in at a very respectable 63.2g / 2.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are both egg cup and spoon are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham and the date letter D for 1928. The egg cup has the W W K & S mark for W.W. Kemp & Son Ltd whilst the spoon has the W.N LTD mark for William Neale & Sons Ltd.
