George V Silver Butter Knife, Haseler Bros, 1913
This is a fine quality George V Sterling Silver Butter Knife with a Mother of Pearl Handle. The blade is in the classic scimitar shape and elegantly engraved with swirling foliage. It is in a scooped form so that you can make butter curls as well as using it for spreading.
The butter knife is made by Haseler Brothers and assayed in Chester in 1913. Founded in Birmingham by William H. Haseler in the mid-1840s, the firm became Haseler Brothers in the 1880s with the partnership of Edward & Noble Haseler. They are best known as the manufacturers of Liberty & Co's famous Cymric range of silverware in the late 19th and early 20th century.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents in the silver and no damage to the mother of pearl. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The butter knife is 14cm / 5.5ins long and weighs in at 16.0g / 0.56oz, a combination of Sterling Silver and Mother of Pearl.
The hallmarks on the underside of the blade are clear to read with just the makers' mark being a little rubbed. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter N for 1913 and the EJH over NH in a shield makers' mark for Edward John Haseler and Noble Haseler of Haseler Brothers.
