George III Silver Table Spoon, WW, Exeter,1812
This is a good quality George III Sterling Silver Table Spoon in the classic Old English pattern. The initials R M H are elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.
The spoon was made in Exeter by silversmith William Welch II and dates to 1812. The older William Welch was active in Plymouth Dock between 1758 and 1800. He specialised in flatware but did make some items of tableware. William Welch II, also a specialist spoon and flatware maker, was active in Exeter between 1801 and the late 1820s and was probably the son of William Welch I.
Condition is good, with just a couple of tiny dings in the bowl and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 210 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The table spoon is 22cm / 8.6ins long and weighs in at a respectable 47.8g / 1.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still okay to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter Q for 1812, the George III duty mark and the W.W makers' mark for William Welch II.
