George II Silver Sifter Spoon, Ebenezer Coker 1753

Here we have a fine quality George II Sterling Silver Sifter Spoon. The spoon has an arching beaded handle and a circular bowl pierced in a rococo design. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The sifter was made in London by highly regarded silversmith Ebenezer Coker and dates to 1753. Ebenezer Coker was an important London silversmith through the middle years of the eighteenth century. He registered his first mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in 1738 and is particularly known for his candlesticks, flatware and salvers and waiters, all of consistently high quality. Both Thomas Chawner and John Lambe were his apprentices before going on to distinguished careers of their own. He remained in business into the 1770s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 270 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sifter spoon is 15.3cm / 6ins long and 5cm / 1.9ins wide across the bowl. It weighs in at a respectable 40.4g / 1.42oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The sifter is bottom struck, as you would expct at this time, and the hallmarks are therefore somewhat distorted but they can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the slightly strange date letter s for 1753 and the E C makers' mark for Ebenezer Coker.
