Edwardian Silver Mounted Claret Jug, 1901

Here we have an elegant, tall Edwardian Cut Glass Claret Jug with a Sterling Silver collar, lid and handle. The glass jug is panelled with a band of scroll and flower decoration on the upper part of the body and a band of acanthus leaf decoration near the bottom. The base is star cut. The silver mounts and handle are plain and there are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The claret jug was made in Sheffield by Charles Edward Nixon and dates to 1901. Charles Edward Nixon established his firm in Sheffield around 1880. The company were both electroplaters and silversmiths and supplied pieces to many high end retailers, notably Hamilton & Inches in Edinburgh and Pearce & Sons in Leeds. They remained in business into the early years of the 20th century.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver, no chips or cracks in the glass and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The claret jug stands 28.1cm / 11ins high, is 13cm / 5.1ins from lip to handle and 10.5cm / 4.1ins in diameter across the base. It weighs in at a hefty 849g / 29.9oz.
The hallmarks, high up on the collar near the handle, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter II for 1901 and the C E N makers' mark for Charles Edward Nixon.
Shipping in the UK is £18.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which covers both the weight and the value of the claret jug.
