Edwardian Silver Manicure Set, J. Deakin, 1909
This is an elegant Cased Edwardian Sterling Silver Handled 5 Piece Manicure Set. The set consists of a buffer, a nail file, nail scissors, a nail cleaner and a pot for nail balm or cream. The silver elements are decorated with the face of the Green Man set amongst birds and writhing foliage. The cartouches are all blank.
The set was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths James Deakin & Sons and dates to 1909. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield and Birmingham and showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. In 1935 they were involved in an ill-fated merger which led to the company's collapse within a couple of years.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver. There are a few spots where the steel has lost its high polish but everything remains usable. The box is a little scuffed on the outside but the hinges and clasp are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The nail buffer is 9.8cm / 3.8ins long, 3.2cm / 1.2ins wide and 3.5cm / 1.4ins high. The nail file is 12.6cm / 4.9ins long, the nail cleaner is 12.8cm / 5ins long and the nail scissors are 11.1cm / 4.4ins long and 4.8cm / 1.9ins across the handles. The pot is 3cm / 1.2ins high and 3.3cm / 1.3ins in diameter. All boxed up the set weighs 285g / 10oz.
The hallmarks on the various pieces are generally well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter k for 1909 and the J D over W D makers' mark for John and William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.
