Edwardian Silver Inkwell, G'smiths & S'smiths 1905

Here we have a handsome large Edwardian Sterling Silver Inkwell. The inkwell is in the capstan style, with a large spreading base, weighted for stability, a hinged lid and a clear glass liner. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The inkwell was made in London by the famous Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company and dates to 1905. Founded in 1880 by William Gibson and John Langman, The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company occupied a famous showroom at 112 Regent Street where they served a high end clientele with goods of the very finest quality. They manufactured at Clerkenwell in London and the Regent Works in Sheffield. In 1952 they amalgamated with Garrard & Co.
Condition is very good, with just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 120 years of good service. The hinge is in full working order and there are no chips or cracks in the glass liner. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The inkwell measures 12.5cm / 4.9ins in diameter and stands 5.5cm / 2.1ins high. It weighs in at 768g / 27oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.
The hallmarks on the upper side of the base are somewhat rubbed but those inside the lid are crisp and clear. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter k for 1905 and the distinctive G & S Co Ltd makers' mark for The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company.
Shipping in the UK is £13.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which covers the weight and value of the inkwell.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
