Here we have a fun Edwardian Sterling Silver Pin Cushion in the form of a Clog. The cushion is in the foot opening of the clog and is covered in purple velvet. The Edwardian era was the golden age of pin cushions in England and they were produced in a huge variety of forms. Today they are widely collected and also remain very practical.

The pin cushion was made in Birmingham by noted silversmiths Levi & Salaman and dates to 1908. Founded by Phineas Levi and Joseph Salaman in 1870, Levi & Salaman quickly established a reputation for high quality silverware and remained in business for fifty years until they were merged into Barker Brothers in 1921, with the brand name continuing on through the twenties.

Condition is very good, with no dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 115 years of good service. There is some wear to the purple velvet, as is to be expected, but it remains perfectly usable. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pin cushion is 6.7cm / 2.6ins long, 2.3cm / 0.9ins wide and 3.4cm / 1.3ins high. It weighs 31.2g / 1.1oz.

The hallmarks, on the side of the clog below the cushion, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter II for 1908 and the L & S makers' mark for Levi & Salaman. On the other side is a registered design number of 478320, which dates the original design to 1906.
