Edwardian Silver Backed 3 Piece Dressing Table Set
Here we have a smart Edwardian Sterling Silver backed Three Piece Dressing Table Set. The set consists of a hand mirror, a hair brush and a clothes brush. All three pieces are attractively decorated with Art Nouveau style flowers and Art Deco style engine turned stripes, with each piece having a circular blank cartouche.
The set is made in Birmingham by H.V. Pithey & Co and dates to 1910, the last year of the Edwardian era. It shows the start of the transition from the sinuous Art Nouveau style to the more geometric Art Deco style that would come to dominate the 1920s and 30s. H.V. Pithey were a retailer of luxury goods in London's West End between the 1890s and the 1920s who had many of their pieces manufactured in Birmingham.
The set is in generally good condition but has definitely seen some use. There are a number of tiny dings in the silver backs of all three items and a some foxing to the mirror, although it still gives a good reflection. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mirror is 27.5cm / 10.8ins from top to bottom and 13.5cm / 5.3ins across. The hair brush is 24.5cm / 9.6ins top to bottom and 7.7cm / 3ins across. The clothes brush is 18.3cm / 7.2ins long and 5.3cm / 2.1ins across. All together, the set weighs in at 712g / 25.1oz.
The hallmarks are on the side rim of each piece and although a little rubbed are still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter l for 1910 and the H.V.P. & Co makers' mark for H,V. Pithey & Co.
