Bronze sculpture signed Moureau. 19th century.
Description: Ancient burnished bronze sculpture depicting Philippides, a glorious Greek soldier.
According to what Herodotus reported, an Athenian hemerodrome named Philippides was sent from Athens to Sparta to ask for support in view of the battle against the Persians and covered this journey of more than 225 km in one day.
After the battle of Marathon, again according to Herodotus, a good part of the Athenian army returned to the city led by Miltiades, marching for about 42 km under the weight of the armor: the Greek soldiers arrived in time to see that the Persian fleet, having confirmed the defeat , was moving away, after having attempted an attack on the polis through a maneuver to overtake the Greek lines which involved rounding Cape Sounion by sea.
The later best-known legend, that of Philippides' race from Marathon to Athens, was not, however, the work of Herodotus, but appeared for the first time in a work by Plutarch composed in the 1st century, On the Glory of the Athenians. In it Plutarch states that a hemerodromo in full armor would have run from Marathon to Athens, would have pronounced the famous phrase "we have won" (in ancient Greek: Νενικήκαμεν?, Nenikèkamen) and would then have died from the effort according to Plutarch, the historian Heraclides Ponticus called this legendary hemerodrome Tersippos, while most historians called it Eucles.
