Introduction
A fine original Austrian Art Deco gilt bronze ballerina by the celebrated Viennese sculptor Josef Lorenzl, 1892-1950, dating to circa 1925.
The ballerina is captured balancing gracefully upon one leg, her elongated form creating an elegant and distinctive silhouette. Her raised head and closed eyes lend the composition a serene quality, while the flowing drapery enhances the impression of movement.
These elongated proportions and sophisticated treatment of the female form are characteristic of the sculptural vocabulary for which Lorenzl became internationally recognised.
The figure is finely cast in gilt bronze and mounted upon a raised circular bronze platform above an architectural onyx plinth with bronze fittings.

The present ballerina displays many of the defining characteristics associated with Josef Lorenzl's Art Deco sculpture, including an elongated silhouette, slender limbs and an elegantly theatrical pose.
Her carefully balanced stance conveys suspended movement, while her closed eyes and raised head provide a contrasting sense of serenity.
The warm gilt bronze surface enhances the modelling of the figure and contrasts attractively with the polished onyx base.
Of particular interest is the documented auction history. The sculpture appeared at Lyon and Turnbull, Edinburgh, on 16 October 2024 as Lot 461 in DESIGN Since 1860 ft. An Aesthetic Interior: The Contents of a London Apartment, where it was catalogued as Josef Lorenzl, 1892-1950.
The Artist
Josef Lorenzl, 1892-1950, was an Austrian sculptor and ceramic designer closely associated with the Art Deco movement.
Born in Vienna, he developed his knowledge of bronze casting through his employment at the Vienna Arsenal and became renowned for elegant female figures distinguished by elongated proportions, long legs and graceful poses.
Lorenzl worked extensively in bronze and also produced chryselephantine sculpture combining bronze and ivory.
He additionally became an accomplished ceramic designer and produced designs for the renowned Viennese manufacturer Goldscheider. His work was also associated with other manufacturers including Keramos.
Lorenzl's surviving figures remain internationally collected examples of Austrian Art Deco sculpture.

Offered in fine used period condition with attractive age-related patination.
General surface wear, minor rubbing and scuffing are present commensurate with age and previous handling, including natural age-related variation and wear to the gilt surface.
There is a very small chip to the lower onyx base.
