Our Stock # 18.8788

This is a pair of antique cordage gauge callipers. An English, boxwood and brass rope or cable measure by J. Rabone, dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1900.

Two fascinating 6" 1207 models for measuring the diameter of cable
Displays a desirable aged patina, some wear commensurate with use
Boxwood frame shows warm biscuit hues and fine grain interest
Brass fittings present a lightly polished appearance and light weathering

Brass callipers create a demi-lune top edge, situated within a sliding channel
Lighter coloured gauge shows breaking loads in tons for galvanised Hawser steel ropes
To the reverse, scales for Manila, tarred hemp and cable laid varieties
Second gauge with lightly worn markings for rope and chain to front, Hawser and Manila to reverse
Both engraved to the edge with 'John Rabone, Birmingham' maker's marks

This is a superb pair of antique cordage gauge callipers, with appealing detail for collectors of traditional measuring instruments. The brass adds charming brightwork and a tactile feel in the hand. Delivered polished and ready to enjoy.
