6 x George V Silver Handled Tea Knives, 1925
This is a smart set of six George V Sterling Silver Handled Tea Knives with Silver Plated Blades. The blades are broad with a curve, making them ideal for spreading butter and jam, whilst the handles are angular with an embossed flower decoration at the top of the stems. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The tea knives were made in Sheffield by Frank Cobb & Co and date to 1925. Frank Cobb founded his company in 1903 moving to the Howard Works in Sheffield a couple of years later. The firm were both silversmiths and electroplaters and quickly became successful. When other firms were struggling in the late 1920s and 1930s, Cobb was prospering and acquired a number of companies and their premises. Frank Cobb died in 1957 but the firm continued to thrive until it finally closed its doors in 1986.
Condition is good with no significant plate loss on the blades and just a few tiny dings in the silver handles, plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each knife is 17.1cm / 6.7ins long and the set of six together weighs in at 160.7g / 5.67oz.
The hallmarks on the silver handles are a little rubbed but can still be easily read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter h for 1925 and the F C makers' mark for Frank Cobb & Co. The blades are stamped EPNS for silver plate.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
