19th C. Dutch Silver Peppermint Box, 1863
This is an attractive 19th Century Dutch 833 Grade Silver Peppermint Box. The box is square with a scalloped edge and a hinged lid. The raised lid is engraved with swags and scrolls around a blank shield shaped cartouche. The raised base has engine turned stripes.
There is a long tradition of peppermint boxes in The Netherlands going back into the late 17th / early 18th century, although examples of early ones are now rare. They continued to be produced throughout the 19th century and into the first half of the 20th.
The peppermint box was made in The Netherlands in 1863 and has the maker code GG 102, which we haven't been able to identify as yet.
Condition is good, with just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 160 years of good service, most of it spent in a pocket or handbag. The hinge is just a little tight, so the lid doesn't close all the way down onto the base but it still stays securely shut. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box is 5cm / 1.97ins square and 1.7cm / 0.67ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 28.7g / 1oz of solid 833 grade silver.
As is usually the case with Dutch silver, the hallmarks are spread around the object. On the inside of the base is the lion passant above the number 2 showing that it is Dutch and 833/1000 grade silver. On the inside rim on the right is the date letter d for 1863 and on the left is the GG 102 makers' mark, which is also repeated on the outside front rim of the lid.
