English (Leeds) Biblical Samuel Creamware c.1780 Creamware Leeds Creamware Antique English Porcelain %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A Small Collection of Four Pieces of Rare Antique English Creamware.

These items were probably manufactured in Leeds and they date to around 1775 - 1780.

The decoration is interesting and likely completed in Holland, before being returned to the UK for retail / distribution.

Each piece is hand-painted in black and iron red and depicts a Jesuit Ware scene from Samuel 10-1 from the bible and shows Samuel anointing Saul. Both the jug and the saucer are marked 'J. Samuel 10-1'.

"Samuel anoints Saul. Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said 'is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?"

This is a very worthwhile opportunity for someone trying to build a set from this scarce pattern, or for those who want a representative example for their collection.

DimensionsThe jug, 14 cms tall at highest point. The saucer, 10.7 cms diameter. The teabowls, each approx 6.5 cms dia x 4 cms tall. Date 1780  Late 18th Century Antiques Origin English Maker Creamware Condition The jug had had some old restoration to the pouring rim. This was obviously originally done to a high standard at the finish and shape are very good, however over time the paint has aged and is now appears a fraction deeper in colour than the unrestored body. It is however still very passable and the jug presents well. The saucer, save for a few very minor nibbles away to the foot, is very good and is unrestored. Tea bowl no. 1 has a couple of very minor blemishes (fleabites) to the upper rim and also a small, shallow sliver away to the foot. Tea bowl no. 2 a couple of small, shallow slivers away to the inside of the foot and few firing blemishes to the rim. All in all everything is fair to good and clean / presentable.
